i guess i should put it this way: ex and I went to couple's/family therapy while we were still married and 'working' on the marriage. ostensibly, we started therapy because of DS's issues, but it was clear that we needed couple's therapy. Ex never really was part of the sessions - he was physically *there* but mostly he sat there and did not participate, the most he would say was something like 'you may have a point there'. *I* took advantage of the fact that we were seeing a marvelous therapist and started to do the work that *I* needed as an individual. at some point, ex just stopped going - never said a word, just didn't go anymore. when i asked him, he said that "he doesn't need it" (indicating that *something* is *wrong* with me ---- because *I* needed the therapy and *he* didn't....
when i got divorced the first time - i DIDN'T go to therapy, my then-husband (DS's bio-dad) didn't want to go and i thought that we had to go as a couple for it to work (silly me). after we got divorced i went to a divorced parent's group ---- but i wasn't really ready for the 'work' - and i didn't really connect to anyone in the group, so it wasn't really effective.
I went to therapy because during some of the most turbulent times of the marriage x2b constantly told me that I needed help.
Peace,
Di
