Hi everyone,

My name is Kim. I have been married 15 years. Dh and I have not been happy for several years. We seperated for 6 mos., almost three years ago. We have often talked about how the end would be, the when, how, etc. We have now decided that we have reached the end. We already have a buyer for our house. Financially it's been killing us as a couple, there is no possible way for just one of us to keep it. We will be here through most of the summer, before settlement, then we will each be renting our own places. Being on my own isn't the scary thought, it's hoping that i find a safe, reasonably priced place to rent. I don't have good credit, and I'm so worried about landlords turning me down. Anyway, I hope y'all don't mind if i hang out.

Welcome, Kim. I agree with R that a private rental might be the answer for you. I've lived in a building and in private homes, and personally I prefer the private home atmosphere - less neighbours to deal with. You also might find an older apartment building might be a little less picky (i.e. might just check references and not do a credit check) than a newer building.

Kim,

Glad you're here (well, that you found us; sorry that you find yourself at divorce).

Hi Ladeis,

Thankis for the welcomes and advice. I will have enough left over from the sale of the house to put down more money on an apartment, so I'll make sure I finagle if I need to. i look forward to posting!

When I went through this, I rented a place from an individual owner. I knew individual owners were less likely to check my credit than an apartment complex, although some do. I told the landlady up front I had some credit issues due to my irresponsible ex, but emphasized that I was a very responsible person. My ex has extremely terrible credit, and he had a hard time renting. He had to give the apartment complex 6 months rent at the time he signed the lease. We used money we got from the sale of the house to get him into the apartment, and then the last 6 months of the lease (when he didn't have to pay rent because he had paid it up front) he had to pay me back 1/2 the money.

Welcome to the board!

The only advice I can give you is to SEARCH around. I live in a really high priced area and everything I found in my price range was either the size of a closet, falling apart, or in a slum. After months, I finally found a really nice place I could afford. My credit was not bad, I just didn't have ANY and they accepted me. You will find something. Good luck!

FYI...Many home owners do check credit, I had several check mine while I was looking! THe best thing would be for you to get one credit report and give that to the rental agents/landlords. Apparently every time you check your credit, your rating goes down. So if you could just have it done once, that would be beneficial!
