How did you proceed with your divorce?

  • Used an attorney
  • Used a mediator
  • Completed the divorce ourselves

I voted that I used an attorney. Initially, we started out trying to use a mediator. During the first session, my gut told me that she was very biased in favor of my ex. He didn't show for the appointment, so we had to track him down by phone, and he ended up being almost an hour late. She said it was no problem. Then, when we got to the financial section of mediation, he said he didn't know how much he could pay in child support, he'd have to, "look at the other bills and see what he could do." When I asked for an amount that was WAY below the state guidelines for support, he said he thought that was too much. I said I'd have to get a second job, and the mediator said, "That's good you're willing to get a second job!"

Needless to say, I really felt my interests and my son's interests weren't being protected. I think mediation is a great idea, it just didn't work for me.

I am an attorney, but not in family law. California now allows limited representation, where someone can do their own, but a lawyer can give advice etc. (used to be that an attorney was on the hook for everything). I went to see a lawyer, and she recommended that I do it myself but that she was available for limited representation. I'm going that route.
