Once they are done?
As fast as the process can find the person. An hour to several days to weeks, if someone knows they are being served and actively trying to avoid service.

Ok thank you. My husband said he filed for divorce this week so I was just wondering how it all works with being served. How long does it take. You answered my question thank you again.

Ok, so it depends if he did the work himself or an attorney (or other "service"). The paperwork has to be filed with the court and then given to a process server, some states a deputy can do it, some states you can just agree to accept service by signing for him that you accept the papers,--doesn't mean that you agree with what they say though (terms)--Just a warning, I am sure you won't agree with it all and be shocked at some of it, so just be prepared....It's never fun even if one expects it. Accepting service from him eliminates the cost/time involved in serving someone (not rec. if DV is involved though) and you & he can arrange a meeting to do it, and then take the papers to your attorney. You will have to file a Response within a certain numnber of days (depending on type of service, and what state, you are in, etc.). Your attorney will give you all that info.

So, if you choose to let a process server serve you, they will do it wherever he thinks they can find you....typically they try homes in early - late evening. Some try harder than others. Some will stake out a location and sit all day waiting, some will make many attempts. It just depends on how agreeable YOU are and if you are going to try to avoid serviece at all. (I know all about this because my stbx's first ex, would ALWAYS have people protect her and hide her, to avoid service of anything).
It depends how predictable your schedule is too. Someone who has kids, is much easier to serve than someone who comes and goes more often.

Good luck to you, however it turns out...Remember people are here for you!!
