i hope someone can help me

i left my abusive, lazy husband a little over a year ago. we have 2 children, ages, 2 & 5. he has seen them probably 5 times since i left. i obviously do not get any child support. my problem is this.. i'm on a tight budget (obviously) and really cannot afford to hire a private investigator. i cannot find him in order to serve him with divorce papers or child support documentation. i know the county that he lives in, but i also know he doesn't have an on the books job. i do know his social security #, date of birth and other relevant information. when (if) he calls, he uses prepaid, untraceable cell phones. what i want to know is if anyone else has been in this situation and what you did in order to proceed with your divorce. i am currently in a new relationship that i sense can get serious in the future and i want to be able to get married again, regardless if it is this guy, or another in the future. i deserve that option and i deserve to be happy, but being stuck to this loser is really getting me down... any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance. :)

Hi,
My first suggestion would be to see if you qualify for Legal Aid. Look in the Blue pages of the phone book under "united states." As you were a victim of abuse and have children, you may qualify for legal assistance.
Secondly, since you know the county your STBX resides, call the County courthouse, clerk of the courts, and ask if there is a procedure for serving someone when you have the info you do. (Having his SSN, DOB, and county of residence is a lot considering you can't find him specifically).
You may also be able to file for a default divorce. That occasionally happens when you can't find the spouse or he's intentionally making himself scarce. By the way, "off the books job" or not, he'd better be filing a tax return or the IRS will be after him. They WILL find him if he owes taxes!
Good luck.

You can get divorced without knowing where he is.
