Joey knocked out his own tooth today...

So... I'm sitting at my desk at work, enjoying the one free hour I have today as all other time is taken up with meetings dealing with the convention we're hosting next week when I get this email from Joey's teacher...
When we came inside from recess, Joseph told me he "knocked his jaw out." I asked if he was okay and he replied yes. He was not crying outside or in the classroom. Then when I asked him to clean up at lunch I noticed he was missing a bottom tooth. I asked what happened, if he lost it at home or at school, he told me he did it outside. So he must have meant he knocked a tooth out. He also said it had already been wiggly. So I'm not
sure if it was or not. He has not complained about it at all but I just wanted you to know! Let me know if you have any questions.
So, my head starts spinning, but I'm banking on the he had not complained about it at all point, telling myself he was fine until I could get home (another 2 - 3 hour meeting scheduled for the afternoon). Joey hadn't mentioned to me that one of his teeth had been wiggly, so I'm thinking they weren't, but I'm truly not sure. I ran out to the Lego outlet (across from work) and get him the ambulance he's been wanting from the tooth fairy...
When I pick him up, he's all proud of himself... but sure enough, his bottom right front tooth is gone... I don't think that I can see another tooth below either. Apparently he hit his jaw on one of the railings near a slide... as the teacher said, he never fussed, so they didn't realize something was wrong... He ate lunch with it earlier fine and we went out to dinner... after dinner we put his ambulance together and he played for a while. When he called his Grammy and his Dad, he talked to them in the most pathetic voice ever... and then laughed like a wildman when he got off the phone. But tonight as he was getting tired, he got abnormally crabby and then said he couldn't sleep at all during nap time because his mouth hurt too bad. I snuggled him until he fell asleep, but I can't say that I'm not worried. Plus, the tooth next to the missing one is a touch loose now too...
For those of you with older children, when do they typically begin losing their baby teeth?

Gosh Julie... I don't remember!

No, the "mate" tooth isn't loose, but the one on the other side, so the one just to the right of the front bottom right one is... I knew he had a high pain tolerance, but wow...
Hope you have a great weekend Karen!

I've been considering the dentist thing myself... I don't see any tooth remaining or emerging... there is a bit of a scab there, so I know there was some bleeding, but I guess he was the little tough boy he always claims he is.... I have to say, the little toothless smile is really cute too :)

(((Hugs Julie and Joey))))....My kids began losing their baby teeth around 5 years old or so. As long as he got the entire tooth out-and there's not a piece of it in there still-he should be ok. I would call the dentist just to make sure....What a trooper though!! Hurts me just to think of it!!

Hey Deb!
Thanks for letting me know about your kids starting to loose their teeth earlier... I've been hearing a lot of 6's, so hearing 5 makes me feel a touch better. I do think he got it all out, but now that it has been a day, the clot/scab has moved, I do see a white something there--whether it is a chunk of the old or the new one lurking somewhat below the surface I don't know. Joey says it hurts a smidgen tonight, but he had a blast at the hockey game tonight and thought it was cool that he "looks like a hockey player" with his gap!
I've got a little free time on Tuesday morning before the convention starts, so I'll probably give his dentist a call on Monday and see if they can squeeze him in... the problem is that Joey is so fearful of the dentist--last time he punched the x-ray tech (male) several times before they were able to take x-rays and they weren't that wonderful... and I had to lay on top of him while being examined by the dentist to prevent him from hitting/pinching or kicking her... it was quite a work out for both of us!

Hi, Julie!
Hope Joey is doing okay. My daughter is 5 and has lost two teeth this year. :-) Hopefully it was just a loose tooth that got bumped out a little early.
Thanks Gwen... he's having fun with it... saying he looks like a hockey player. He has complained of soreness at times, but I imagine it would hurt going on his description of how it happened. Now that the clot has cleared, I can see a little bit of white down there... and my xmil just noted that his gum does look a touch swollen, so maybe that is his real tooth waiting to make its appearance!

Thank you... I bet he did look like a jack o lantern... it was just funny since we were going to the hockey game, how he "put himself in uniform!"
