My mom went nuts when my husband and I got married and now I have a lot of items with our names on them/initials. I think I want to break the champagne glasses, but what about the afghan with our names and wedding date and the monogrammed towels? Any advice would be appreciated.

Got a seam ripper?.... I'd remove the monogramming... and usually after a wash, you can't see the "holes" where the threads were removed.... if you're careful to just nip the monogramming threads and not the threads that make the towel or afghan.

If that won't work.... Goodwill! (Sorry, but I've never been a monogram person.... I'm too much of a recycler!)

ITA about the seam ripper - and any chance your mom might 'correct' the monogram, sort of a gift to mark your new life?

Good luck.

seam ripper = same personal satisfaction as breaking the champagne glasses :)

I agree with that....

I got rid of the couple of things I had that were monogrammed. I think I threw them away though. meh, to each his own ;)

Do you have kids? If so, they might like to have the glasses or afghan some day. If it were me, I don't think I'd get any enjoyment out of using the afghan or towels. Even if the monogram came out completely, I'd still remember that it had been there. If you feel the same as me, you could still remove the monogram with a seam ripper (sounds like a cathartic experience) and then donate it to charity.

I'd maybe save the glasses and such if there are children. Put them in a box in the attic for a later gift to the first married child. As for the towels and afghan, I'd have fun with them. Use them to clean house with. The towels may work well to wash the car for instance.

When my ex married his mistress, my daughter was in the wedding. they sent her home with the flower girl dress and for a couple of years, it drove me crazy. Just recently, moved and as i unpacked her stuff, there was that dress. I decided to use it to dust the furniture. I feel better even though it was an evil thing to do.

it seems the seam rippers have it!
i don't have kids, so i am not saving them for anyone.
thank you, everyone.
your posts made me laugh and gave me some ideas.
laughing is a good thing in these situations - costs nothing and is pricelss.

They sent her home with the dress??? OMG, thats just nuts. It's like throwing it in your face.

I would have let my daughter roll around in the mud with it on and then sent it back in a plastic bag...... maybe with a note.... "I tried getting the stains out, I just couldn't!"
