My Joey has strep...

When he woke up yesterday morning, he had this horrible rash on his hands and feet and knees... and was a little slower than the 100 miles per hour he normally cruises at... but this rash scared me... it was bright red, puffy, a bit warm and ugh... Add to that the fact that signs were posted at daycare stating that three of their teachers were out with strep... so I spent a good portion of yesterday on the phone with the advice nurses of the local children's hospitals and speaking to the pediatrician on call from his ped's office... who determined that he didn't need the trip to the ER, but needed to be seen today at their office...
I've personally never had any experience with strep--somehow managing to avoid it growing up... but I got Joey into see his ped this morning and he does have strep... he says his throat doesn't hurt, though... so maybe that's coming... his ped assured me that she sees a rash in about 25% of the strep cases and I'm glad he got it (it has mostly gone away now) because otherwise, I may not have realized he was sick...
Obviously we were home from school and work today. I'm going to go to work tomorrow and my Mom has agreed to take off and stay with him, so that he can stay home for one more day. As for treatment, he's on Amoxicillin for the next 10 days, twice a day... the ped said he could go to school after three doses of the antibiotic, provided he was no longer holding a fever... but we are going to keep him home through tomorrow at least....
Joey was cute and when she came in, he asked if he was going to get a shot... she asked him if he could keep a secret and that is when she told him she didn't know how to give a shot... which just tickled him!
Anyway, just wanted to share the fun in our corner of the world...

Awww, being sick is no fun! Give little Joey a hug from my kids and me ;).
Mel
It sounds like you're got a great pediatrician.

My daughter got that rash with strep infection also. I think that's what they used to call scarlet fever. I was told it is caused by a toxin the strep bacteria produce. But it will go away once those antibiotics start doing their trick. My daughter's skin also peeled in the rashy areas and got really itchy when it was healing up, so don't be surprised if that happens too. I found the caladryl-type lotions and oatmeal baths helped.
Poor little guy...give him lots of hugs and jello/ice cream for his sore throat. I hope you can stay well too! It's really nice you have a grandma handy to help out.

Hey there Cupcake...
That is exactly what is going on and is causing the rash... after his diagnosis yesterday, I got out one of my medical microbiology textbooks and looked up Strep and everything "fun" that goes along with it...
His rash actually was the worst on Sunday and was much less absent yesterday... the doctor could see it, but it wasn't the sort of thing that would jump out, like it did on Sunday...
And you're right, I'm lucky to have my Mom so close to be able to help out... my xmil is also close, and was out of school due to Coretta Scott King's funeral (all of the county schools were closed for it), so she could have helped out in a pinch, but I hate the thought of her getting it and taking it back to her school...

Hi Brenda...
Knock on wood, I'm feeling pretty good still... other than the exhaustion that came from the worry of him being sick... he's doing much better now and hasn't napped at all today, so I'm hoping for an early bedtime for him this evening...
I did not get a perscription for myself and this is one of the times that I wish we went to a family doctor instead of a ped for him and an internest for me... but should the slightest symptom appear, I will call and get myself in...
*hugs*

Yeah, Joey's ped checks for "monkeys" in one ear and "alligators" in the other... she is really wonderful with him and my favorite by far... the doctor who was on call over the weekend was my least favorite of the bunch and I was disheartened when I found out it was her...
I believe that Joey is ready to go back to school... he was very disappointed that he couldn't go today... but I feel keeping him home was best for him and us and the school too...
Mom and I are doing so far so good... but as I told one of my colleagues today... Joey's at that wonderful age where he hasn't learned to cover his mouth ~every~ time he coughs or to cover his nose ~every~ time he sneezes... he's getting much better (probably due to my barking out "cover" when I hear him start coughing or sneezing) but he has some room for imporovement in that area too... Hand sanitizer is one of my best friends...

"he'll probably feel 100%. And be running around at 110%!"
You know my son... that is him exactly... he seems to be doing a bit better today and is more like himself... almost there...
Thanks for the well wishes!
