New Here-Child Support ?

I have been lurking a while and reading everyone's stories. One day, when I have about 3 hrs I will tell my story. But today I have a quick question, before heading to the attorney's to work on the financial part. What does child support cover? Do you receive extra for Dr. visits, sports fees, school supplies/clothes, etc. (I have a 7 yr old and 2 grown children).

In a brief discussion regarding this, STBX made the comment about one thing we were discussing that "that is what I am going to be paying child support for." I was just wondering who pays for the "extras."

Thanks for your input.

Get it specified in your papers: child support PLUS 1/2 extra curriculars, sports, medical AND dental expenses not covered by insurance (copays, medications, orthodontics, deductibles, etc). Specify EVERY SINGLE THING!!!! if your son has daycare, get that specified as well (1/2 childcare expenses). Child support should help cover the cost of raising your child (clothing, food, etc).

don't back down or settle. Make sure your attorney puts everything in the papers. Believe me....and get the child support garnished...don't make the same mistake I have....

Thanks so much for your response. Right now everything is "amicable" but who knows if that will last. I want to be fair but I don't want to get the short end either.

I have learned alot reading these boards and hopefully as I go thru this, maybe I can be of help to someone else.

Thanks again for responding.

Amicable is good...but do NOT shortchange yourself or your kids just to keep peace. I did that and now my ex is OVER $50,000 in the hole. Be prepared for your stbx to bicker about the money. It's what is due you.

I've always said-you can't be friends while going through a divorce...maybe once it's final sure, but not DURING....

Stand up for you!!

Thanks! I think I needed to hear that. I'm not the best at standing up for myself. That is something I'm learning to do.

Just remember that support is your child's right..... a legal right... and having it outlined in writing protects you and your EX.

Thanks so much for the info! Needless to say, I'm new to this divorce thing. After 23 years of marriage, who would have thought?!! (I know, everyone is probably thinking 2 grown children & a 7 year old). And yes, the 7 year old was planned. LOL...

I'm hoping this goes as smoothly as possible, but who knows how anyone will act. Heck, maybe I will be the one to get cranky!!

Thanks again for your replies.
