When I posted my thanks I forgot to ask my burning question- how do you choose a medical insurance plan? When we sign papers in March I need medical coverage- COBRA is almost $2,000/mo. and is out of the question- there are so many plans and options it's confusing. How have ya'll handled this problem? I'm a certified teacher (who never taught because I stayed home with the kids) and I am aplying for part time jobs for the Fall so I can go back to school at night to re-certify for special ed., but they don't offer insurance for part timers. Help- the options are deeper than the snow outside (which is now almost up to my hips)!

Hi,

Well everyones medical needs are different, but if you and your family are healthy then a more affordable plan such as a HMO where you will just have a copay at the time of a office visit. A PPO plan will most likely have a deductible that will have to be met before they will pay a claim, and even then you will still have to pay a % of the visit. Keep in mind that with a HMO if you are hospitalized your copay will only be a couple hundred dollars at a max and with a PPO the deductible and % can be expensive. Even a simple out patient procedure can cost you a pretty penny.

I hope that helps!

Is the medical coverage you are looking into for yourself or for your children? If it is for the children, can they be covered on your stbx's policy?

The insurance I'm looking for is just for me- stbx covers the kids. I don't understand the limitations of a PPO vs. a HMO when it comes to covering specialists and hospitalizations. Does anyone understand this stuff? Also, there is something called a Health Savings Plan- how does this factor in? All confusing and difficult for me to understand. Would appreciate any information that has been helpful for others.

I own my own business, so I'm not covered under a corporate plan.... I have an individual policy for me (and my kids, too) since my EX is also self employed.
