Petition for divorce is here
| Fri, 01-20-2006 - 10:16pm |
My divorce papers arrived in the mail today. I'm holding them and getting ready to sign. All I have to do is enclose a check for the filing fee and I'll be divorced by the end of July.
It's sort of bittersweet. I want to be rid of him at this point, but it's sad to see our names on the petition along with the numbers that show we made it for 13 years 6 months until the actual physical separation.
I know I'm better off without him. Rationally I know this. But a part of my heart is still broken over the fact that he turned out to be such a jerk and did the opposite of what he always said he would do: Make our family his number one priority.

Awww, Gwen... I can so relate to what you're going through... it isn't the easiest thing to see it all in black and white, with all the details, even when you know it is the right thing...
Take the weekend and try to absorb some of the shock from getting it and seeing it... I "saw" my petition for the first time while I was at work, and it took my breath away for a moment, just to see it all as we had agreed... and looking so very formal and real... I mean, I had hired the attorney and paid the retainer, etc, but seeing it made it a lot more real.
And this process is bittersweet... a lot of people face similar things going into their court appearance... I've heard more than one person say that when the judge said, the marriage between x and y is dissolved, that they felt a big loss... and being shocked that they felt that way.
Wishing you a weekend full of peace...
*hugs*

Today has been much better than yesterday. I went and got a hair cut, bought a radio for my desk at work, took my kids to story time at a local book store, and got to visit with a group of friends that I haven't seen in months. It felt really good to catch up with them. I also bought some new plants for the house and front porch. Plants always make me feel good.
I know I'll bounce back from this upset. I'm not crying and inconsolable. I just feel a bit of heartache, but I know this is for the best. I know my life will be better (and already is) without him.
I went ahead and signed the papers this morning and mailed them with the check this afternoon on my way out to run errands. The lawyer said the petition will be filed this Thursday. It's strange to think that by the end of July I will be officially divorced. The fun news is my sister says she is throwing me a divorce party in New York City when it becomes final. I called this morning to say I was sending the papers today and that I am taking her up on that in the late summer. ^_^
Good for you!.... and By the way.... "divorce parties" are all the rage, so to speak.

I'm glad to hear that you're doing better today... it sounds like you had a great day today... I love to catch up with old friends...
The heartache thing I can definitely relate to... I just remember being so relieved to receive my papers because xh had all ready signed them (and I was sure he was going to put up a fight with my stipulations...). I remember that day too... it was the second week in February when I got them... signed them the Friday before Valentine's day and put them in the mail... then I had to fly out of town for business that night and remember everyone being all excited because they were flying to whereever to see their boyfriends.... are you going to see your boyfriend? um, no... just signed my divorce papers today, no need for that yet...
I actually had a friend in the town I was traveling to for business and wound up spending the weekend with her and her husband. It was a great weekend and her husband was great on Valentine's Day... cooking us both an incredible meal and keeping the white zin flowing... I couldn't have asked for a better weekend, considering!
And, I too, have heard that divorce parties are all the rage now... I sent my aunt a congratulations card when hers was finalized... I saw an invitation for one a while ago... it was something about the bride giving the groom the wrong finger... I laughed so hard... I'm sure you'll have a blast!
You mentioned NYC... do you mind me asking what part of the NE you live in?
*hugs*

Julie,
I had no idea divorce parties were a real "thing". I thought my sister was being silly yet serious when she suggested it. Also, I actually live in California, but my sister lives in Manhattan, so I get to fly to New York for a party weekend at some point down the road. Yay!
