Spousal supp. in CA--how determined?

Hi everyone, I'm back.

I am darn near ready to retain a lawyer (we still haven't filed!), but am wondering one thing, and I called a lawyer to ask this but he didn't call me back.

I am eligible to receive and I will be seeking spousal support from STBX (in CA, you must be married for 8 years or more, then you are eligible to receive SS for 1/2 the time you were married). My question is, does anyone know if spousal support is determined by your income or money in savings? I will receive a large sum of money shortly from the sale of our house, yet I am unemployed. If I become employed, will that reduce my spousal support? Will having this large chunk of change reduce my spousal support?

I have given details of my situation in previous posts so I won't repeat everything here just to save time.

Thanks for your input!
