Is there a particular reason a spouse does this?

I have mentioned the D word......and he's spending a TON of $$$ fixing up our house.

Thanks for your attention.....

Question:

How could I go about opening a checking acct for myself?

How would he know about it?

hmmm. But unless I am doing this all quickly --- won't he know as year end statements come thru. He is a CPA. Or would that not necessarily come up in relation to yearends. ?

If you get interest (and I think it's only over a certain $$ amount) the bank will send you a 1099, but if you open a checking acct, usually they don't earn interest anyway so no year end statements.

Thanks & ..... this may be a dumb question, but.....

IF he's spending so much - so that's there's not much left......

That really just affects me in that --- There's not as much LIQUID cash for me to have?

In one way it's just transferring one asset (cash) to another (equity in the house)--hopefully the work being done is actually increasing the equity.

Sweet,

The moment you say, "I want a divorce" you put your husband on the defensive. And you say he's a CPA? Well, surely he's very well schooled in what happens in a divorce, especially when it comes to money.

Since you're let the cat out of the bag without any preparation on your part you have some work to do. For starters, is this threat of divorce just the latest salvo in your maritial arguments or something new you took out to see if you could get him to change? If you've been unhappy in your marriage have you gone to your husband and made this known to him? Have you gone to marriage counseling?

Open a savings account until you get a job.
