Hi. I have been lurking here as I'm getting ready to start my divorce process. Here's the thing. I have my consultation with the lawyer tomorrow. What information are they going to ask, what information will I need to take? Is there any thing else I might be prepared for that would help?? TIA!!

Gypsy,

When I first met with my lawyer, I took all financial information that I could get my hands on...pay stubs for myself and H, last 3 year's tax returns, bank accounts, list of debts, retirement accounts, car titles, info about your house, 401K info, etc. If you get all of this info together, that will be less time that your lawyer has to spend doing it (called "discovery".)

Also, if you have children, you may want to come up with an estimation of monthly expenses that you have for them (private school, clothing, school supplies, etc.). This will help your lawyer if child support may be an issue.

Lastly, if you have any evidence that your H was abusive or cheating on you, take that to your lawyer as well. She needs to know this, whether or not you want to pursue an at-fault divorce due to abuse or adultery.

Hope this helps!

Some of the basics the attorney asked of me yesterday also included my STBX driver's license number, social security number, place of birth (city/state/county) and employers info as well.

Good luck!

In my experience, most lawyers send you home with a worksheet where you take your time filling out the basics of your finances, assets, etc. The things I would spend time talking about during the consultation? The BIG topics

Hi Gypsy,

You've gotten some great tips already... and your attorney will go over the basics for divorce in your state.... and pretty much let you know what they need to get things rolling.
