Why so many Keep Name?

I've wondered this a long time ----
Why do so many women, who took their husband's name, keep it after divorce?

Is it just practicality?

I don't think I could!

I'm keeping my last name because of my son. I know that my mother in law kept her last name because all of her diplomas licenses ect. were under her married last name and it would just be a pain to change all that stuff.

I'm keeping my last name because that's who I've been for the last 29+ years.

I'm in the same boat. I kept my married name because I think it's important to keep the same name as my children. Also I'm known by this name professionally and I believe that changing it now would cause too many problems.

  1. It's who I've been for 18 years

  2. To keep the same name as my son

  3. Will have to have it changed with Social Security

  4. Will have to have my driver's licence changed

  5. Will have to then change my vehicle title

  6. Will have to update all my medical records

  7. Will have to update all my bills (utilities, credit cards, etc.)

I suppose if I didn't have my son and I really, really hated my stbx I would change it but I just don't think it's worth all the hassle.

It certainly is a PITA to change your name on everything, so it's easier to just keep the darned last name and match the kids. I tell people I hate being called Mrs. So-and-so and to just call me by my first name, or call me Ms.

And then there's the added bonus of cranking off the new wife/wives who hates that you're also Mrs. So-and-so!!!!!!
