Anger Management

I was involved in a relationship with a man who comes from an extremely troubled past. His parents abused him, an ex girlfriend of his killed herself, and he found a friend of his dead - all of these things happened to him before he even turned 25. He is normally a kind and caring man, and he has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever met. The only problem was, when we would fight, he would often insult me and say really hurtful things. I put up with this for some time because I knew he had gone through so many hardships in life, but I always encouraged him to seek help. Well, eventually, we had a really nasty fight and the insults went too far, so I ended the relationship. He was devastated and said he would do anything to get me back.
Since the breakup, which was about two weeks ago, he has gone to therapy and has signed up for a 12 week anger management program. Does anyone have any experience with these types of programs? Maybe you or someone you care about has gone through one. I am just curious what they are like and whether they are effective in helping people cope with feelings of anger. ANY info on anger management programs would be helpful!! Although him and I are still broken up, I want to be there for him as a friend throughout this whole experience. I still love him and I am hopeful that one day we can get back together. I just want to know what to expect from him as he goes through this program and what I can do to be supportive. Thanks!
