My ex-husband was unsmiling and withdrawn too.

Welcome to the board lisaanne,

I too was wondering if he was always been this way? If not, it sounds like there is a good chance he is depressed and you should ask him to see a doctor and get help. Would he be willing to participate if you planned something for your anniversary like going out to dinner or something?

Welcome to the board lisaanne58,

Is this the first year he hasn't wanted to celebrate?

Can you ask him straight out "I really want to celebrate my birthday with you - can you do this for me?'

If you have been married 25 years and this is how he has been for 25 years why do you expect things to change? Honestly, there is no reason to change him because he doesn't have a problem. He is who he is. Either you need to accept it or leave. Obviously it is has not been that big of a deal or you would not have been with him for 25 years.
