It's best this relationship ends, it doesn't sound as though it was ultimately a happy situation for you and if he wasn't willing to overcome his fear then you had nothing to stand on and no reason to believe he would change. You should be with someone who is willing to work out his problems in order to have a happier relationship with you - this guy has a long way to go, let him deal with another germophobe because it's clear you're not compatible. It's not a wasted 2 years if you learned something from it and I think you did. Let him walk!

A relationship is never a waste, we can always learn lessons from it and grow. But it does sound as though this man has some really serious emotional and psychological problems and needs professional help.
