give him another chance?

Hi,
I've been struggling for the past week or so on what to do about my ex-boyfriend and I's relationship. He did not treat me with respect and emotionally abused me, as well as, not telling the truth all the time for whatever reason. I finally told him about it and he said he would change. A month went by and I did not feel him putting any effort to change. So I broke up with him after he said some mean things. Now, he says he's going to change and will do anything to get me back and make our relationship work. I'm not sure if I should go back to him or not. I know a month is not enough time to change, which makes me feel that I should give him another chance. Plus, I still have hope for him to change but at the same time I'm not sure if he really will. I'm not sure if I should let him go (even though I don't want to right now), or give him another chance and possibly be disappointed again. I almost feel that if I do give him another chance, that if it does fail, then hopefully the hope that he will change will be gone then and then I'll really know that he won't change and that I have to let it go.
Does anyone have any advice or have been in a similar situation?
Thanks for reading/responding

Welcome to the board starsabovex,
Until his actions and words match, you should hold out.
Starsabovex,
I have been in your situation before, gave an ex too many chances to count.
This is how it works:
