How do I find a good marriage counselor?

Hi, is there a resource to find a good relationship/marriage counselor in my area? My husband and I have been arguing about dumb things and I feel like we could use some counseling on how to better argue and communicate, but looking up all these doctors on our health providers website seems really sterile. How do I know we would get someone good that can help us? We're not in a troubled relationship, I just think we could both learn how to argue/fight in a healthy way better, and with a baby on the way, its really important. We both are totally up for it. Any advice would be great. thx!

You can check with your local pastors, churches, hospitals and universities. Find out who is well trained and has a good reputation. It's also good, if possible, to speak with some people who have worked with this particular marriage counselor.

Look on the web as well. Some counselors have written books and are well known. Check everyone's credentials. Make sure they are well trained and certified. Then, of course, go see for yourself. There's got to be some good chemistry between you as well.

All the best wishes,

Start with your MD. Try calling your insurance company too. Do you know of anyone in therapy who you could get a referral/ Do you live by a college with a Master's program in counseling?- they may have free or low cost counseling too from students who need their hours.
