I am engaged to be married july 2004. My fiance has a child from a previous relationship. Yesterday she asked me to pick up my child to be. I asked what time should I be there to pick up. She said be there 10 or 5 min before 7pm. I left my place at 6:30 and got there at 7pm. she called and asked what time did I get there. I said at 7. She asked why did I get there at 7 when she said to be there 5min before 7pm? I started to get upset and said I didn't think it should be an issue if I'm 5 minutes late. She then asked if I intentionally ignored her instructions to get there at 7? I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Later she said, what if it had been an emergency and I had to be there at a certain time? I said, I understood but I was just picking her up because I'm 5 minutes late should, you start giving me the third degree. She said, I didn't understand. She was reallly upset. I understand if something happens I need to be there. But, I thought she was totally over reacting. She was really upset. I don't know. I'm I an insensitive jerk?

No your not an insensitive jerk. Are you a mother yourself? Where were you picking the child up from? What kind of notice did she give you to pick up the child?

I get the feeling she was testing you, to see how responsive you'd be in this type of situation, how important it would be for you to be on time, follow her instructions where HER child is involved.

Have you considered pre-marital counseling? It would be a great place to bring this issue up.
