Finding it difficult to make a move. Husband of 9 years (partner of 17) has crushed the foundation of our marriage with his drinking and abuse of prescription drugs.

Go get yourself professional guidance and advice on handling the many complicated issues that this difficult situation creates. You need a good therapist, in person, to talk to, so that you don't fall into a depression or have your feelings go out of control. You must do this not only for yourself but for your children, who need at least one healthy parent in the middle of this chaos. There are ways of dealing with this kind of situation, support groups, wise therapists and as you mention good legal guidance. It's too important to do in a hit and miss way. Get yourself the support system you need.
