<< I plan to (again) let him know that soon after the new year, he needs to step up the job hunt and even take something he doesn't like in the short term.>>

Rather than tell him what he needs to do, I suggest you simply clarify your own values and communicate them to him. I get the impression that, along with your genuine appreciation of things spiritual, you value the idea of taking responsibility. You notice that he isn't doing this, and the discrepancy between your value and his behaviour gnaws at you subtly but relentlessly. Simply put, you don't fully respect him.

If what I'm saying makes any sense to you, I suggest you tell him that you're uneasy about the situation because you wonder if the two of you don't share an important value. That way you're not blaming him or asking him to change, just laying your own cards on the table. It will allow him to volley back with his own thoughts (or if you're lucky, actions).

In reality a lot of people have to work at mind numbing jobs they can't stand because they need a place to live & food to eat--people can only be so picky when they have someone else paying for all their expenses.
