I'm 49 and my gf, that I just broke up with, is 22. Assuming we were compatible, boy would you be happy with me. Except, I don't think I could be needy enough to satisfy you.

Anyway, he is an alcoholic. They come in many varieties but generally don't attempt to kick the addiction until their life falls apart to the point that they have no choice. As of now, you are the one preventing it from falling apart, hence, you are partially responsible for him getting drunk. It's called co-dependency and you get something out of it (albeit it an unhealthy need) just as you do caretaking

I have to notice the irony in the statement "our relationship was good except for his excessive drinking."

Here's what you do. You pack your bags and leave. He's 35 and not likely to change his lifestyle. You are his built in babysitter. I hope you have supportive family and friends because really, this relationship is very one-sided. YOU deserve respect and an equal partner. And right now you don't have that. If you stay and have kids with this man, your problems will only multiply. Get out now for your sake!
