I have always been the quiet type and hardly ever the conversationalist -- especially when it came to small-talk.

Welcome to the board 41andaging,

I guess part of beinal good at small-talk is what you talk about. The weather is always good, sports, tv shows, gas prices, etc. When answering questions make sure to not answer with yes, no, and other simple one/two words answers. Put some effort into your replies and ask questions also. But remember that small talk isn't as important as being able to have meaning conversions. Are you able to do that?

You and your wife can have interesting conversations by engaging in interesting activities, both together and on your own.

As suggested above, having a common interest would help, like a sport, hobby, television show, project around the house, etc.

There are a lot of books on Amazon about the art of conversation and making friends.
