I voted "Never gonna get 'em." I did seriously consider it previously because I'm only a 32A cup. And I even went so far as to meet with a plastic surgeon. But I changed my mind and decided that if a man likes me, it's going to have to be the way I am. Even with small boobs, I've still received plenty of attention. ;) There's a lot more to being a woman than having large breasts!!

It's true that there is a risk of this occuring but it doesn't happen to a large majority of women with implants. It depends on how your body scars. The newer proceedures insert the implant under the pectoral muscle which reduces this risk because there is constant motion and pressure around the implant. This prevents hardening. Implants used to only be inserted under the skin and fat (above the muscle) and this made the scar tissue more prone to hardening.

Actually most women get them done over and over again because they're not satisfied with the size. It's true that they don't necessarily last forever and most don't but it's not like they explode every few years. The newer implants in Europe and Canada can last a lifetime. Usually if hardening occurs it's because of the position of the implant or the women did not let it heal properly. And I don't think you understand implants because they do not have to be "continually and painfully squeezed". When a woman first gets implants, she does have to perform excerises to stop hardening when the scar tissue first is developing. It is painful in the beginning- obviously if you've gone through being cut open you're going to hurt- but once you've healed, you're fine, under normal circumstances. And more experienced surgeons will tell you it's better to NOT squeeze and massage new implants too roughly. It's very gentle. I don't really think you can make the assumptions you are without ever having them yourself.

It's even more of a shame that men feel they have the right to make comments about a woman based on her choices. It is a drastic choice to have implants and I would not advocate it to the vast majority of women because I think many of them get them without thinking. With any surgery there are risks but for some women, it is worth it. As a man you have no right to criticize any woman who chooses to get implants. Many women have deformities that affect their lives emotionally and you have no way of relating to that. The risks of implants are blown way out of proportion.

I believe I've already explained why I have made my comments and they certainly are not based on assumption.

Just because I would never choose to have implants myself, does NOT mean I have no knowledge or personal experience with them through friends and family.

The majority of women I know who have had them for 10 or more years, say they wished they had never had them done at all.

AND if women are having them done over and over again, because they want increasingly bigger and bigger implants, then they are continuously fighting encapsulation, aren't they?

I disagree.

Not all implants are placed under the pectorals now and many drs. don't think that placement is wise at all. Each patient is evaluated and treated as an individual case, based on their own genetic, medical and reproductive history.

And regardless of where the implant is placed, it is still a foreign object and the body will react to it in the same way.

I never anticipated a debate on the risks, or perceived risks, of implants. I just wanted to know the general take on it with ivillage posters and lurkers.

What is suprising is that no one has admitted to having them and then having them removed for good. I would have thought a few would have fit that category.

Thanks for answering with your votes and comments.

I said Never gonna get em. I know people that have them and have never complained about them and I totally understand that some people feel more secure, or happier with implants. I however, have naturally D-cup sized boobs, and if i were to do anything it would be to get them reduced...I think if you're getting implants, never go over a C in size, I can never wear cute haltar shirts or low cut shirts because i look trashy with all the clevage i get, or if i don't wear a bra. I'm only 19, and it sucks to not be able to wear the same fun haltars and tube tops and whatever else to the clubs with my friends, so I would definately say if you're getting implants, just think about the effects of the size you are planning on and definately don't go over a C cup. good luck ladies.

Good point. I know several women who have had them removed or are contemplating having them removed.
