Brokeback Mountain?

The awards show coming up tonight has got me to thinking...
How many of the guys out there (boardies, spouses, boyfriends) are just dying to see a movie about a couple of gay cowboys (sheepherders, actually)?
Look, I am not at all homophobic - some of my best friends including a brother and two brothers-in-law are gay - but I have a difficult time understanding how this movie can be getting such incredible ratings when I just don't imagine that guys are lining up at theaters to see it.
Your thoughts? Is it all just Hollywood hype, or what?

It's "artsy" Jackson...and it's trendy to be gay. As you say, I am not homophobic either. I've known gay men that were good guys and known Lesbian women that were great too. However, right now making a movie about gay men is "edgy" and Hollywood likes edgy.
Peace,
Scott.

Oh, I know what Hollywood likes; my question is, what does the average moviegoing guy like?
Again, is this movie popular (*really* popular) because Hollywood promoters like it or because moviegoers like it? And, among moviegoers, who are they? Women? Men? 50/50 or 80/20?
Well, I'm interested in seeing it but can't seem to steer my DH to it. He just isn't interested in seeing two sheepherders go at it. LOL! I can't say that I blame him as I have no desire to see two women simulating sex either.
Guess I'll have to see it with a GF.
And I don't think it IS the numbers of actual moviegoers that are drawing all the attention. I think it's the critics, awards AND the two well-known straight actors playing the lovers, that are. As far as I've read, the numbers themselves aren't that impressive.
Don't disregard female film goers, as well as the homosexual crowd, either. They will support a movie, particularly when a film is more plot and character-driven than action.

How does any movie do well? Usually because it's GOOD.
And i enjoyed Brokeback very much as it portrays something all too common even in this day and age: People remaining in the closet.
I read the book, and its a great story. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

IMO, and this is only my opinion mind you, it seems to me that now more than ever there is a push of acceptance. Acceptance of the gay's, the gay lifestyle etc. is one of the major issues pushed. This movie puts it out there in a "see it way" so many would never know. They see the relationship, the guys as other wise straight guys, they see the humanity of the two, the love, the compassion, etc. never really seen by many ppl.
There are many groups behind the gay movement and gay rights, etc. I think they, including Hollywood, are pushing this movie. They want it out there in a big way and are giving it all they got to get it out there.
As far as who is actually watching this movie, I really can't say. My oppinion would be the gay population, the young crowd, I would tend to think more straight women than straight men, but probably many curious straight couples would be amoung those buying tickets.
I myself care nothing about seeing two men being intimate in that way. Actually I care nothing about seeing anyone being intimate in that way but dh and I. LOL!! Roll film baby! LOL!!
Well, the movie is shaping up to be somewhat better than the run-of-the-mill crud that Hollywood usually puts out.
I'm guessing that it's a movie that will primarily attract women. Quite simply, because it's a love story. Yes, it's got a couple of guys in it, but it's still first and foremost a love story.
And I disagree with some of the posts saying that the interest factor is because of homosexuality. The way I see it, homosexuality has been mainstream in western culture for a good 20 years....there's nothing new or shocking about it. Our city holds a month long gay festival every February, culminating in the "Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras" which has become so mainstream (loads of families, young kids etc come to watch) that the Gay lobby actually want to reclaim it a little LOL.
Anyway, my DH is happy to go and see it with me. Not in the least because of the names behind it. Ang Lee, Proulx and McMurtry. A wonderful director and two great writers.
