Erection problems

My boyfriend and I have been having sex for over a year now. During a hard time in our relationship several months ago, he’d had problems maintaining an erection during sex, but it passed quickly. Suddenly, with no obvious reason, he’s having problems again off and on. He still clearly wants me and we try to have sex, but even without a condom or during oral, he loses it - the only way he can keep an erection is by having sex doggie-style.
When we try to talk about it, he says that it’s because he’s a type one diabetic with “bad circulation”, but if this was a medical problem, would it come and go? There isn’t (to my knowledge) anything wrong in the relationship, so what could be causing this and what can we do to remedy it?

Diabetes DOES cause circulation problems, no question. However, he doesn't seem to have problems when he's behind you, does he? Diabetes doesn't know one position from another!
He needs to talk to his doctor about the problem. In most cases, I would say it's an emotional problem, but the diabetes complicates matters.
