Garter Belts: Friend or Folly?

My guy lives out of state and is coming to visit in a couple of weeks. We have seen each other a few times but it will be our first time being intimate together. I had planned on buying some lingerie for him thinking along the lines of some Xmas-y. I told him this and he wanted hints on what I was getting and he asked if garters and thigh highs were involved. I asked if he liked those and he said he liked lots of stuff he was just throwing that out there. I have a garter belt that's never been used because I have visions of my thigh highs being around my ankles. Do those things really work on real women??

The short answer is that No, those things don't work on real women. The thin little garterbelts/suspender belts that have four straps and plastic catches are designed more for the bedroom than wearing stockings in real life. Garter belts that are designed for day-to-day use, REAL use, are much deeper and wider around the waist and hips and often have 6 straps with metal clasps. Since in the invention of pantyhose you rarely see real garterbelts but the demand for something that you can wear in the bedroom or for an hour or two to spice things up has resulted in the crop of lacey garterbelts that you see these days.

Interestingly enough, I've heard that real suspenderbelts and stockings are meant to be quite comfortable relative to pantyhose once you've gone through the process to clip them on. No crotch-drop apparently is one big plus. And then there is the whole effect that they seem to have on men to consider too!

If you're looking at something for the bedroom any garter belt and stocking combination will do - basically ANYTHING that you can find for sale will one of these types. If you're looking for something to wear out to dinner, or longer than an hour or two - look for something that is fairly wide/broad that covers your hips and tummy a little and provides some extra support around the hips. Some expensive foreign brands like Aubade, Valisere, Simone Perele and Antinea have some deep suspender belts but they are a bit harder to find and you'll probably have to order them online rather than find them at the stores.
It's unlikely that you'll find real, everyday "genuine" suspender belts easily.

As far as stockings go, there are two types. Hold-ups that have a thin band of latex rubber inside the lace top to "stick" to your leg and "hold-up" the tops usually without a garterbelt. Proper stockings are designed to be worn with a garter belt. Make sure that you get stockings that a tall enough so that they don't pull down - you may have to get a size taller than you would normally get. The straps shouldn't be tight, a light but firm tension should be enough to keep the stockings in place. Don't forget to adjust the lenght of the straps as necessary.

Oh, one last thing. Underwear OVER the straps, not under.

They always work for me. In fact I used to wear them to work to feel sexy. They do show through if your skirt is thin.

I totally agree with karenjean. And, yes, I too have worn them outside the bedroom and really never found them uncomfortable. Try them with sexy panties or no panties. Your so will love it.

It's annoying at best--more of a constant awareness of their presence, then an uncomfortableness. The reason I have found it so is because the straps fo the garter belt are elastic(flexible) and they attached to the stocking fairly tightly(without slack). As you walk, bend, sit, stand, you feel this resistance as the elastic stretches and retracts. The whole dynamics of the garter belt/stocking is resistance, which s why the straps are elastic in the first place. You are aware of them, no doubt.

Thanks guys for your input! I bought a cheap pair today but they were too short. I guess like it says in one of the above posts, I need to try the next longer size. I had hoped to wear them out to dinner with him (under my school girl-esque plaid skirt, hee hee).

I buy my garter belts at www.secretsinlace.com . Buy the six strap kind (50's style) because they're so practical and also comfortable all day. I got yeast infections when I wore pantyhose.

Go to a lingerie (spelling?) shop and get yourself fitted propperly. The sales girls are a great help they know what ones sell which ones air hostesses wear. This is for real panyhose falls down during takeoff apprently if you buy the ones air hostesses wear it will stay up. I did just that full lace four tiny straps so comfortable I forgot I was wearing it got one in every colour:-).

Don't be afraid to mix and match the perfect knickers for the suspender belt might not be of the same set or colour I had a peach one which was great. Knickers on the outside have fun I did. I even wore it to Mcdonalds forgot about wearing it until a flsh of it nearly killed the poor boy behind the counter. ;-)
