hello, i was just wondering what the differance was between the pill and shots, and why some prefer one over the other?

thank you...

Well, the pill I feel is better because if the hormones are affecting you too muc, you can quit them immediately. With the shot, one lasts for one month(Lunelle?) and the other(Depo) lasts for three. I had depression and loss of any sexual desire or response on Depo, and I have talked to many others who have also had that happen. Sometimes it doesn't show up until the second(and sometimes third) shot. It was a miserable experience for me that I would never want to repeat. Both work in the same way, they supress ovulation.

i forgot to mention that im not on the bc pill for actual birth control, i started it for migraines, my headaches are hormone related. i would always get one or two everyday a week before my period started, and then once i did start they would subside.

but me and my bf are sexually active but we use protection... i just thought that if the shots were more potant , then we could try without a condom... but from what i hear, its not much differant..

thanx again

It doesn't matter WHY you're on the pill, but you ARE on it, and it is birth control. As long as you're taking it properly, meaning every day at approximately the same time, and never skipping a pill, it's the most effective form of birth control. The hormones "fool" your body into thinking you're already pregnant, and it stops ovulation. If you don't ovulate, you can't get pregnant. The 1% failure rate is due to human error in most cases. I was on the pill for 8 years when I was married, and never had a problem, and never got pregnant. You may be taking it for headaches, but it's still birth control, and you shouldn't have to use condoms, as long as you're both disease and infection free.

All the different b/c methods work differently in your body, and cause various side effects. The next time you see your doctor, discuss the various methods. There are patches, IUDs and several other methods. But only a hormonal method will help with the migranes as well as provide birth control.

I have used both methods (and I haven't read any other posts so sorry if I am echoing anyone) and didn't notice much of a difference. One major difference is I don't get my period while on the shot. I switched to the shot because I could never remember to take a damn pill at the same time every day. Taking it every day wasn't a problem, it was timing it that was. With the shot, it's a once every three months deal and I love it. No period, no little pill, just one little shot. When used correctly (yes, there are ways to mess up the effectiveness of the shot), it is more effective than any other BC pill. Not by much, you go from like 99.4% effective to 99.8% (or whatever they are - those are not specifics, just the shot is correct. I am not too sure about the BCP). Not a big jump by all means, but it just works better for me.

I have heard a lot of people having those side effects from the Depo along with LOTS of weigh gain. Although I am on the Depo, I do not know if they can change your dosage - do you think that could have a difference on the side effects? Just wondering because I have been on the Depo for 5 years and I have never had any sexual side effects, no weight gain or depression or anything. Sorry to hear you had such a horrible experience on the Depo. It's sad how much the same thing can effect two people so differently...I love it, you hated it...

I also had weight gain. I think different dosages *do* make a difference. When I first started getting it, I got it through the health department. Your dose was based on weight etc. Then when I got married and moved, I was under the military's health coverage. They had a set dose that everyone got, and didn't take anything like weight into account. That was when I started having problems. If they had kept the shot dose at a level that was right for me, I may very well have not had the problems that I did. However, I am not sure how the dosing worked for the people I know who also had bad side effects.

How funny! When I started getting the shot, it was at the health department too. That's where I got the BCP from too, when I first started any method of BC. I started on them originally for acne, switched to the Depo, and it came in handy when I started having sex and have been on it since. I do go to a regular doctor now though, since when I moved out I made enough to support myself and then some (according to the health dept although I don't agree :( ), the health dept made me pay. After doing some research, it was cheaper for me to get it from the doctor's office. But they contacted the health department prior to be being 'treated' to get the dosage. I guess that is why things have been fine for me. Again sorry to hear you had such bad side effects.

I believe my wife had mentioned something about "homrone" pills being used for migraines one time as well...can't remember exact details.

Man o man, wish we men had our own pills we could take for that, LOL!! I've suffered migraines many times throughout each week for well over a score now, and those OTC pills are no more effective than candy most of the time, even with WAY more than adequate water intake. If I spell it right, I believe parafon forte was the strongest horsepills I ever took for them, but these headaches appear to be here for life. COME ON DOCTORS!, LOL, wheres the male hormone pills for these?!

;D
