inexperienced question for women - help!

I am 19 and have only had minor relationships. I always wanted to wait until I was in love to have sex, so I am still a virgin. I just met a great guy and we've been together for 3 months. I'm not ready for sex yet... but I have an embarrassing question. I have never shaved "down there" before and I have no idea about what is considered normal for women today. I've never been an open person aut stuff like this with friends, so I thought it would be easier to ask online. If anyone could clue me in, I would really appreciate it. thanks!

Hey BostonGirl, you might try the Fight Cellulite and Remove Hair board for more details on this subject.
There's nothing about sex that is "normal". Shaving is a personal choice. It's not something you do for a man, it's something you do for yourself. Shaving is a recent fad, and many women do it, but many more do NOT do it. There is nothing wrong with pubic hair. If you haven't felt the need to do it for yourself up till now, then don't worry about it if and when you become sexually active.
I've never shaved or waxed, other than once or twice to see what it was like. It was uncomfortable, and it needed to be done almost daily. I have better things to do with my time! I can't even imagine what waxing must be like other than embarassing and painful. I've never had a man complain about pubic hair, and as a matter of fact, there are many men who don't LIKE it shaved. This guy won't care whether you're shaved or not.......he'll be happy to have sex with you either way.
What matters is what you want......and so far you haven't worried about it, so why start worrying now?

As the others have said, do what you feel comfortable doing.
Completely shaving and waxing bare are pretty trendy recently but I really don't think that THAT many women do it. I've certainly never been involved with any women that have ever completely shaved or gone bare on a regular basis. Gets talked about a lot, and because these are sex boards you'll hear a lot of talk about it, but I'm not sure that the general population of women do it.
Trimming seems to be pretty popular. Whip around with a little electric trimmer and trimming it all shorter (oh, maybe a 1/2 to 3/4"?). Maybe you'll trim the stray hairs that are in the way along the edges of the labia. No shaving or waxing involved.
A combination of the above where you trim all over but then shave or wax "below"; around the labia isn't uncommon. You might finish this with shaving the edges "up top" on the pubic mound to form the remaining hair into a shape. The "landing strip" when the hair up top is trimmed and shaved into a long rectangle, or just the inverted triangle that we're all familiar with seems to be common.
Personally, I think that if you just trim a little to tidy things up then you'll be fine.
My partner does the combination thing - doesn't "shape" the hair on the pubic mound, just tidies it up so she's got a tidy upside down "triangle", and she shaves "below" around the labia and entrance to the vagina.
And don't panic what guys might think. They'll all have their own personal preference and most will happily go along with whatever you choose to do. I guess they could politely ask if they prefer something else but at the end of the day its your choice.
GOOD LUCK
I never tried shaving it bare until after I was married...then my husband wanted to do it for me, so I let him. When it started to grow back it was really uncomfortable. Now I trim, like lots of people mentioned, and I shave the areas that would show in a swimsuit. My sister keeps hers shaved bare all the time, and my mother has never applied a razor to her bikini area or her legs in her life! So, it's a matter of personal preference and how much time you want to spend maintaining it.
If you do decide to shave it bare, put unscented solid deoderant on the area when you're done and you won't get red bumps...my sister swears by it.
