lots of questions about shaving!!!

So my bf is very, very keen for me to shave... down there. I'm not entirely sure why, but the idea is kind of aversive to me. Although he seems to think most woman DO shave, I don't know anybody else who does!

So who's right: is it 'normal' to shave? That is, do most people do so? I totally get that whatever makes you happy is 'normal' and all, but is it 'the norm'?

Can anyone give me some first-hand experiences with shaving? How on earth do you even do it without cutting yourself (I assume you can't just use a normal razor)? How do you keep from getting in-grown hairs and isn't it itchy?

Last, is it totally selfish of me to not want to shave? It's not like I don't trim and keep things generally tidy, but he has mentioned it makes it less than fresh and that the hair chafes... for the record, he does shave himself and hasn't really pressured me, just has made his opinions known. I do want to be sure I'm game and willing to try things out, but somehow I just don't like the idea of it... is that unfair? Should I at least give it a go?

First of all, it is NOT the "norm".

I don't think that it's as common as he'd like to believe. Going from the porn on the 'net you'd think that every woman was shaved, but that's simply not the case in my experience. It's the exception, not the norm.

One problem that I've always come across with g/f's that shaved was the stubble, the regrowth and the ingrown hairs. No problem for some, major pain in the pubic area for others. It's high maintenance compared to a trim and tidy and some people do have problems with sensitive skin and the prickles. Some didn't mind the maintenance, others were driven to distraction and weren't interested in the constant work. Waxing which can be more expensive (and painful) can solve some of the other problems but it isn't perfect either.

My DW currently trims really short (< 1/2") and shaves along the edges of the labia and vulva. She finds it a pretty good compromise, and I like it too - again, it's a good compromise. From time to time she'll shave more off. Both of us do like the sensation of the extra bare skin.

Welcome to the board, Maefaire.

I'm not sure about normal, but shaving does seem to be a fad right now, especially among the younger population. Nearly all porn has women completely bare, which probably feeds the fad.

As far as his request being fair .... I think it's a fantasy he has, and an easy one for you to accommodate. I wouldn't ever do anything that went against my own personal boundaries, but I don't see how grooming a mostly hidden area of your body would be a huge violation. If it were me, I'd give it a try. You might love it, you might hate it, but you'll never know for sure if you don't try it.

I had a conversation with a friend once who was surprised that I keep a shaved/waxed appearance. They didn't think a woman in my age bracket did so.

The topic arose between DD and I not long ago. After a discussion of grooming she asked if I had ever had it done at a salon.

Well I recently discovered that my mother dons a shaved look, and I was shocked! I wont let on about her age, but I am very late 30s.

As for shaving, I have done it a number of different times, New razor, his shaving cream and a nice hot shower. I tend to put my foot up on the side and bend at the knees (not to get too graphic, but it does work best for me that way) I have gone all the way, trimmed with some shaved and au natural. I like to throw him off by doing it once in a while. I do think you should try it, it will grow back if you hate it. I was like you though at one point, didnt know anyone who did it, until one day at work, and boy I felt like I was the only one not doing it.

Now, I am shaved around the enitre expect for the 'landing strip' as it is called (I think) The only time I felt awkward having it shaved was when I had to go to the obgyn unexpectedly. Obviouslu they see everything but it was a little different.

Oh, and I have waxed at home myself. That wasnt too bad, a little painful, but you can take it. The only thing that was hard was getting all the way back. I didnt master that.

Good luck with whatever you choose. Let us know, I am sure he will like it even if you dont go all the way.

Mrs P, I do think the shaving issue has become the subject of talk for all generations. My own mother has made a few comments about the trend, disapproving of course. That she was even aware of the trend took me by surprise at first, but I did mention to her that I prefer being well groomed.

I am smiling for you and your daughter!
