So my bf is very, very keen for me to shave... down there. I'm not entirely sure why, but the idea is kind of aversive to me. Although he seems to think most woman DO shave, I don't know anybody else who does!
So who's right: is it 'normal' to shave? That is, do most people do so? I totally get that whatever makes you happy is 'normal' and all, but is it 'the norm'?
Can anyone give me some first-hand experiences with shaving? How on earth do you even do it without cutting yourself (I assume you can't just use a normal razor)? How do you keep from getting in-grown hairs and isn't it itchy?
Last, is it totally selfish of me to not want to shave? It's not like I don't trim and keep things generally tidy, but he has mentioned it makes it less than fresh and that the hair chafes... for the record, he does shave himself and hasn't really pressured me, just has made his opinions known. I do want to be sure I'm game and willing to try things out, but somehow I just don't like the idea of it... is that unfair? Should I at least give it a go?

I've shaved before. It's an interesting feeling at first...everything seems a lot more sensitive. It is a bit high maintenance for me though, so I prefer to just keep trimmed and shave occasionally (whenever I'm in the mood for it). It's definitely something to try at least once. If you hate it, it will all grown back within a few days and you don't have to do it again.
My GYN doctor actually gave me a lecture about it though. He said that because of all the hair follicles, you are more at risk for an infection when you shave completely. I never thought about it like that until he said something.
I don't go bare, but maybe I'll ask my GYN about it during my visit next month.I've heard that from another member on the board in the past. It doesn't seem all doctors say the same thing though -- which makes me wonder if it isn't a bit of an opinion more than a proven medical fact. Out of curiosity, was it being bare, or the shaving that made the most difference? (Like would waxing be just as risky?)

Mine asked me where I got mine done!
She even wanted to know the name of the aesthetician...
