Male Contraceptive?

Researchers now say that a safe and effective male contraceptive could be available in the next 3-5 years (options that could be available include a pill to be taken orally, patch or gel applied to the skin, and injection given every 3 months). Do you think a male birth control pill is a good idea? Would you ask your partner to take it?

Hi Angela!

I think the idea of having males share in the responsibility of birth control is wonderful. I know a lot of women have difficulty taking hormonal birth control, and this would be a huge help to them.

If I was still in a position of needing BC, I would certainly entertain the idea of my partner using one.

Had such a thing been available when I was single, I would have been all over it, as would most of my friends. We all knew horror stories about one casual relationships unexpectedly requiring the marriage/abortion/paternity suit/fatherhood decision, and would have love to have been one step closer to avoiding that in case she forgot to take her pill, had a complication, or the condom broke.

The one thing I would worry about is the possibility that people would forget about STDs and forego condoms for casual sex.

My partner and I were actually just talking about this last night. He was saying that he wished that they gave men more of an option to take charge of their own fertility. Besides condoms, vasectomy or abstinence, men don't have alot of say in the case of birth control. He personally had been in a relationship where his partner went off of birth control and never told him. This resulted in a child that he loves, but was born into circumstances that he wasn't happy about. If he had the option of being on birth control himself, that would not have happened. I think men should have the same options and control as women. It is your own responsibility as an adult to be sure you are protected, men are held just as accountable as a woman if a child is born, they should be able to make that choice for themselves.
