There are a number of possible causes, some serious, some not quite so serious - but all of which may require medical attention.

He really, really, should consult with a doctor if the tenderness does not go away within a day or two.

Pain is not normal, it's your bodies way of saying something is going on.

No, it's not normal. Pain is the body's signal that something's wrong.

Has he offered any explanation for the cause of this pain? Sports injury, accident, fight, etc.?

Morris, you have already withdrawn your post, but I wanted to tell you about a severe problem I had arouund 1988. My testicles were swollen and hurt like the blazes. This lasted for many months. I could not sit comfortably, and even started to pad my underwear with soft foam. I finally went to my family doctor and he said that it probably was from a long vacation trip I took in my car. He thought that sitting for long hours in the car probably caused it. The pain continued, so I went to a Urologist. He diagnosed it as Epididimytis, a painfu infection in the tubes and ducts surrounding the testes. He gave me an antibiotic called Ampiciiin and told me it would take as long as 2 months to get rid of the infection. 2 months later I returned to him not much better, so he added a prescription called Butazolidin. I was finally free of the pain within three months, butI suffered with this condition for at least 8 or 9 months.

I do not have a remarkable memory for medications. It is just that my wife keeps fantastic records, so she got her book out and that is why I know the medications. I remember that the pain was excrutiating. I hope that you don't have this condition, but it is not too common, so I would suggest that you see a Urologist.
