"It is always amazing to me how parents forget whet it was like for them when they were young, the raging hormones, the peer pressure. The only thing that we didn't have was the blatant sexuality on the media, it was still there just not as obvious."
I liked reading your response, because what popped into my head as I was reading the first few posts is that on the debate boards when questions like this come up, if I offer an opinion it's disregarded because I don't have kids.

I know in my sons school, abstinence is taught as a form of safe sex and/or birth control. It is part of the discussion where they discuss the spread of STDs and how having multiple partners increases the risks of catching them.
I don't think it is taught as something that is abnormal or impossible in the classroom setting. However, I think peer pressure puts that light on it outside of the classroom. I would hope the teachers would acknowledge this, and encourage students to make decisions for themselves.

"But when a lot of parents read this question, they think about how they feel about their own children and what they want for them."
Carrie, I think that is so true! I have teenagers, and have had step-teenagers, and it is difficult to move past the thinking of what you "want" and into "reality". A parent wants to protect their child -- from everything. Then they enter those challenging teen years where you can't believe you gave birth to them .... that helps to start the separation, lol.

I totally agree with Tish. Sex ed should be taught in both schools and at home. Parents and teacher urging abstinence is good is one thing, but the reality is that teens are tempted to experiment and most will have some kind of pre-marital sex. The least we can do is give them the knowledge to stay safe and protect themselves as well as their partner(s).

Awww, Cat, that's sad news. I know accidents happen, but when it moves past the first pregnancy, I can't look at it as an accident anymore. That's a prime example of the reason why I think condoms should be made available at all schools, from middle school on up.
I think condoms should be so much a part of regime, that they're second nature! While not 100% effective, they at least give these kids a chance.

Another good point -- protecting their partners!

I remember having sex ed in freshmen year and later at the end of my senior year (2001 LOL)
Welcome to the board, Amanda, and thanks for joining in.
"I did, my best friends mom was a fountain of information"
Do you find that you are still fond of your friends mom? I have known the type of mom throughout the years, one that seems to be the mom that all the kids go to. I know they usually seem to have lasting, special bonds.

Yeah, "Kris" was like a second mother to me.
