Teaching "Abstinence Only" education is like teaching drivers ed by telling kids "don't have an accident. Here's the keys." Studies by the CDC, among others show that kids who receive ANY kind of sex ed have their first intercourse at a later age, but kids who receive abstinence only education are less likely to use a condom or any other birth control when they do first have intercourse.

Banish ignorance - teach them the whole story!!!

As a college student who was raised in a home which talked openly about sex, I felt that my school system did not address the issue of sex enough.

Out of the mouths of babes!

Unfortunately, there are parents which live in denial, and refuse to understand the ramifications of not speaking openly and candidly about sex. I fear that many of these parents don't have a solid understanding themselves because they didn't get "The Talk" when they were young. This lack of openness and understanding is what leads to the perpetuation of the "sex is dirty", and "good girls don't do that" myths.

Yep...if his jeans are tight (as they were in the 80's), he won't be able to get you pregnant

I know the big arguments in this area about abstinence only teaching usually center on the issue of safe sex. I think abstinence could be taught as *the best* option for many, but I don't think issues of safe sex can be tossed under the carpet for anyone.

I also think it's odd that those who support abstinence only teaching fear that the discussions of birth control will encourage kids to have sex. I know when I was first learning about sex, STDs, pregnancy, etc., the entire concept scared me to death! Knowing that there were diseases, or I could get pregnant and caught by my parents actually kept me from having sex for a longer period of time!

Welcome to the board, sunshinegirl87.

It's interesting that you bring up the positives that result from sex. I know that it seems kids are usually taught it's something they should avoid, and out of curiosity if nothing else, they have to challenge that. If it's so bad, why is everyone doing it type of thinking would probably encourage them to see what it's really all about.
