When DW and I first started addressing our marital difficulties a few years back, (electronic) love letters were one of the mechanisms I used to communicate my feelings to her. Our initial stumbling attempts at talking through our issues too often degenerated into hurt feelings, getting defensive and clamming up, as neither of us had yet developed the skills to be able to talk through such things calmly and rationally. Writing things down allowed me to communicate the depth of my feelings for her, the eroticism that I found in her body, and my unwavering desire to have a better intimate relationship with her (and only with her), without getting interrupted by an argument. With time and practice our verbal relationship skills have both improved, but those letters very definitely provided the foundation on which we've built what our marriage is today.

When was the last time you wrote a love letter? I'm not sure, but I know I have written them to DH over the years a few times. I'm much more likely to write "love notes".

When was the last time you received a love letter? I think the last time I received a love letter, it was from a BF that was trying to mend our relationship years ago. But, hubby writes me "love cards" for almost every holiday. They have been awesome over the years, and I have saved every one of them.

Does it make you feel better to write a love letter, or to receive one? If I have too many pent up feelings, it can make me feel great to get them down on paper, even if I never send it to the intended. However, there is no feeling like receiving a love letter (note or card) when all things are good in a relationship.

After reading the article, did you learn anything new about writing love letters? I don't know that I ever organized my thoughts so well in a love letter. I think they have always had a nice flow to them, and what I have written seems to have flowed out of the pen naturally. I think I'll stick with that style.

Did it inspire you to write a love letter? I can't say that it inspired me to write a love letter, but it did remind me how special love letters are. I think it might be something nice to incorporate into my holiday gift giving season, perhaps to tuck in hubbies stocking.

That's really good that the 2 of you did that. I'm sure that would save and help a lot of marriages if they did you what and your wife did. I'm happy for you!

When was the last time you wrote a love letter?

In the strictest sense...late last year.

When was the last time you received a love letter?

Late last year as well...my own letter was a response to it.

Does it make you feel better to write a love letter, or to receive one?

It depends on the reason the letter is written, the spirit of it's intention. Love letters can be painful...they are not all "hearts and flowers" letters. Then again some can stop your heart and change you forever. I prefer the latter.

After reading the article, did you learn anything new about writing love letters?

No. Truthfully I am quite good at putting my thoughts and feelings into words.

Did it inspire you to write a love letter?

It inspired me to wish for one....LOL. There is nothing as beautifully tangible as to have someone express the depth of feeling they have for you on paper. It's permanent and the letter and be taken out many times and read over and over. By the same token....an old love letter may find itself being ripped to a hundred pieces and burned. That can feel pretty good too. LOL

"... we spend all the time we can together. He's my best friend as well."

Isn't that a wonderful feeling! Hubby and I are just amazed sometimes by the realization that we are each others best friends in addition to everything else that we are to each other.

Steve, I think this was a great idea to work through things. I find that writing does give me the time and space I need to clear my mind as well.

Years and years ago when I was in a long distance relationship, and when email was still uncommon, my then-boyfriend and I sent each other love faxes. We'd fax each other every couple of days. Apparently he kept these for a few years...

Like Steve, I've used electronic love letters to communicate with an SO. We were both pseudo-extroverts and when it was time for us to open up, share and let the other person in we hit upon a stumbling block. So I wrote, and he replied through email. We continued on with email even though we lived together for some time. The first time he said that he loved me was in an email, sent when he was in California.

If I ever fall in love again, I think I would send love letters.

Last time I sent a love letter, I was in a rather bad relationship.

Not going there. LOL
