I had my first "Ladies appointment" about a month ago and it was very uncomfortable and really hurt to the point where I was almost in tears... is that how sex is going to be??? Because after that awful, awful appointment I told my friends I would never have sex and I would never go back there, either! Why the freak did it hurt so bad? No one ever told me to expect that.

I've been going to the gyno since I was 14 - and the first time I swore I was never going back. It felt like they used the jaws of life to open me up!!! A couple years later, one of the many docs at the clinic realized that I needed the smallest speculum - and that was a little better. I looked at the ceiling and counted tiles. I breathed. I even took a tranquilizer before appointments. Nothing made it comfortable. Then the realization came that the staff didn't care - they just wanted to move as many women through to get their funding. I was seeing them because of severe menstrual cramps...all they saw was a young woman needing birth control.

I was referred to a clinic 3 years ago by a couple of different people. The staff is very nice, and my PA (physician's assistant) is so easy to talk to. My yearly was last week - and I hardly felt a thing.

My suggestion? Ask around. If you are not happy with your current care, and felt you were treated badly on your first visit - imagine later visits. Ask friends (and even family) if they know of a doctor to go to.

Blessings -

Liz

PS - I lost my virginity at 23, and the guy was smaller than the smallest speculum available...so first-time sex didn't hurt at all for me. LOL

I've had the opposite experience.
