When you have an episiotomy, it's not a matter of the stitches dissolving, it's a matter of whether or not it's healed. I tore a stitch once, and it hurt worse than the original cut! Don't you have to go to your OB for a checkup (usually at 6 weeks)? He/she will be able to tell you if it's healed or not. The doc is usually the one who tells you when it's ok.

Yes, you should wait until your postpartum check up! Not only does your episiotomy have to heal, women often don't realize that the cervix and endometrium also has to heal. The cervix has to return to it's pre-pregnancy/delivery position and size. Then the endometruim, especially where the placenta was attached, has to completely shed the vascular attachments that was created to support the placenta which nourished the the baby in utero. Obstaining from sex during the postpartum period is not only for vaginal and episiotomy healing but to help prevent any possiblity of infection of the uterine cavity. Give your body the time it needs to recouperate. Only your OB Dr can tell you when you've adaquately healed.

You should probably see your OB before you go for it. That said, I waited aobout 3 weeks with my 1st, and 5 with my 2nd. But, had no stitches or tearing either.
