WE HAD A DISCUSSION AT WORK TODAY THAT NO ONE REALLY KNEW THE ANSWER:
IF SOMEONE HAS ORAL SEX WITH HIS/HER PARTNER WHO HAS A COLD SORE, WILL HE/SHE DEVELOPE GENITAL HERPES? IF SO, IS THAT THE SAME HERPES THAT CANNOT BE CURED?
ALSO, COULD IT TAKE A WHILE (YEARS) FOR THERE TO BE SYMPTOMS IF INFECTED? AND COULD THEY GET INFECTED IF THE COLD SORE WAS NOT VISIBLE.

Try this for a quick summary: there are zillions more pages of info if you google "herpes".

>>IF SOMEONE HAS ORAL SEX WITH HIS/HER PARTNER WHO HAS A COLD SORE, WILL HE/SHE DEVELOPE GENITAL HERPES??<<
If they catch the virus, Yes. You may be lucky enough to not get infected even if you are exposed. The oral and genital herpes viruses are two different types of virus, but they can both infect both genital and oral areas.
>>IF SO, IS THAT THE SAME HERPES THAT CANNOT BE CURED?<<
Yes. Once you have herpes, you have it for life.
>>ALSO, COULD IT TAKE A WHILE (YEARS) FOR THERE TO BE SYMPTOMS IF INFECTED? <<
No, as you'll see on the fact sheet, when you are first infected the first symptoms appear within 2-10 days and are often mild. After that outbreaks of cold sores can occur several times a year.
>>AND COULD THEY GET INFECTED IF THE COLD SORE WAS NOT VISIBLE.<<
Yes, although there is a lower chance of getting infected. Mild outbreaks can occur that don't have the usual symptoms. You may not even notice the outbreak, but your saliva or fluids can still have the virus in them.
