Viagra is for men who have diagnosed erectile problems, not for the man who has an occasional loss of erection. That's perfectly normal for all men, occasionally.

Drinking an occasional beer doesn't cause loss of erections. There are some who say that smoking does (because nicotine is a vaso-constrictor) but it doesn't effect everyone that way. My ex SO was 69, smoked like a chimney and never had an erection problem.

It works by raising the blood pressure in the area, but unfortunately it drops the blood pressure in the rest of the body, which CAN be fatal to someone who has blood pressure problems. It helps a man maintain an erection, and that's all. It shouldn't last for hours, and in fact, there are warnings with it that say if the erection doesn't go away in a few hours, to contact the doctor immediately.

If your b/f has constant problems with his erections, then he needs to talk to his doctor, or see an Urologist, who specializes in urinary and sexual problems. There is nothing to be embarassed about. If it's just an occasional loss, that could be due to many things like stress, other medications that he might be on (antidepressants and blood pressure medications are the best known culprits).
