SO disagree with that irresponsible and cavalier suggestion! Most people don't believe that surgery is the answer to self esteem issues. Surgery is dangerous, EVERY time, elective or not and it shouldn't be undertaken lightly ever.
And what about all those flat-chested men who can't seem to pump up their pecs? They're not measuring up to the idealistic standards presented to us either. Should we also encourage them to get pec implants? IF not, why not?
Why does the contact lens industry exist? Can't people just wear glasses?
A lot of people apparently feel that they look better with contact lenses. This demand has sparked a large industry for contact lenses made of silicone. These pieces of silicone are put right on top of the wearer's eyes. How is this different from modifying the body in other ways?
As far as the scare about "implants", I think it's safe to say that most people in the industrialized world currently under 50 years old will have some sort of implants in their body eventually. Heart valves, other synthetic body parts. With advances in medical technology, this is going to happen, but you don't hear moralizers discouraging others from getting these implants. (And it's not a case of medical necessity vs. elective surgery, as the line between them is blurry.)
Come on! You can't seriously be comparing the use of contact lenses to getting implants, can you? That's hilarious!
I've worn contacts since I was 13 yrs. old and to this day, have never had serious complications from them. We know that's not the case with implants. They will often have to be done over and over because of hardening, etc and each surgery poses a new risk. When one goes under a general anesthetic, you are risking your life. Sorry, your comparison is a joke.
I don't think you can compare contact lenses to breast surgery, quite a big difference if you ask me.
The best gift we can give our children is a good start on self esteem, so that they don't feel pressured or compelled to allow society, or someone else, undue influence on their self image.
I think this is why young girls today, 15 and sometimes even younger, are begging to go under the knife. They don't feel good about who they are, so every negative comment or criticism from a boy, friend or the media, plays too much of a role in their self esteem.
I watched The People's Court with Judge Marilyn Milian the other day.
How about butt implants ... for curvier hips ....
