Could it be that you get to have an occasional tryst with someone of the same sex?

Josey, iVillage editor and author of Sex on My Desk, asks if anyone has ever heard of this word?

You can reply directly on her blog, but, of course, we want to know your answer to!

y'all just cost me $2 on iTunes. I didn't have either song, and was curious enough to buy them.

Catchy...

Yeah, the Jill Sobule song has more of a 90's indie vibe to it, but today's teeny boppers all have the Katy Perry song on their iPods.

Glad your $2 wasn't completely wasted.

I think Jamie Anderson's "I Wanna Be A Straight Guy" might also be in that mix.

I'll never find out if I'm heteroflexible since I'm so monogamy-rigid. ;-)

I also posted this in my neighborhood. Here's what I had to say about it there.

Have you ever heard this term before?

I've never heard the term, but it sounds very similar to men who primarily identify as straight, but who have the occasional same-sex hook-up "on the down low".

Do you know anyone whom you'd consider "heteroflexible"?

No. Everyone I know who swings that way self-identifies as either bisexual or gay/lesbian.

Where would you place yourself on the straight/flexible/bisexual/gay-lesbian spectrum?

I'm straight. I've never had any kind of same-sex encounter, nor ever been interested in having one — but I'm also very secure in my sexuality. I've never had a problem being around gay men. In my younger single days I had an occasion to share an apartment with gay men (and I'm fairly certain there was same-sex sex taking place in bedrooms other than mine). On occasion I've accompanied friends into a gay bar. I've never taken part in an MFM threesome, but if I ever did any accidental contact between me and the other man wouldn't freak me out. But I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in having any kind of sex with another man.

So no — I'm not flexible.

Any other thoughts you have on the subject?

Nope.

I'm pretty sure I'll never find out either ;-)

(Looks like Mrs P has some new words for that dictionary she's developing, hehehe.)

Great questions, Steve.

I know this is the first I heard of this term. As a woman, I think we (as in women) are expected to think less of two women being sexual than we are of two men. I don't know if that's because men are more afraid they might find they like something ... and thus have to identify themselves as bi-sexual, but in general, I don't accept the thought process.

There was a time when I would pretty much make sure the scenes involving 2 women were fast forwarded through if watching porn. With access to more porn, I've found myself being interested in watching some group sex videos. In those situations, the guys reaction when there are two or more women available to him is usually pretty hot to watch, so I'm becoming more and more able to see past the gender of the women in that respect.

Even with that, I would definitely classify myself as straight, especially since I've never seen a woman IRL or on-line that has made me think I might want to get naked with her. I could, however, imagine how hot it would be to see those expressions on my own mans face along with the reactions of his body. In that respect, I could just as easily be a spectator across the room (maybe with wand in hand, LOL).

I highly doubt that the situation will ever present itself or become a reality if it did, but the fantasies are fun! (Maybe I have heteroflexible thinking.)

I know I've posted about this on several occasions, Misty, but I'm of the opinion that we as a society are in roughly the same place with the idea of male-male same-sex sex as we were with female-female sex back in, say, the early 70's. Back then straight men were coming out of the closet with the fact that they (we) found the idea of two women together a turn-on, men's magazines were just starting to feature pictorials of two women together, and seeing a girl-girl scene in a porn film (they were still films back then) was an erotic novelty and not a staple of every porn video under the sun like it is today.

When I read posts on the various boards here about women who enjoy watching gay male porn it strikes me that we're in roughly the same place now with the shoe on the other foot. In another generation or so, I doubt that we'll still see that difference you talk of between how acceptable male-male sex is viewed by society versus female-female sex.
