head start on new year's diet

Oh boy. I think I shared I was in the ER on the 23-24th. I felt awful all day x-mas, and went back to ER on the 26th. Still no answers. Things went from bad to worse and I went back on the 27th and they admitted me as in patient. Basically, any time I eat I have terrible pain and either throw up, have it come out the other end or both at the same time. It's really NOT fun. I came home yesterday on the 30th. I can't count how many times I have been stuck with a needle. Each ER visit they did it 4-6 times in each arm. As an in-patient was worse, my IV was in my wrist. I finally asked that it be moved and they put a huge long one in my forearm. And the testing, OMG. I've had 2 CT scans (cha-ching!), 2 ultrasounds on my belly, a vaginal ultrasound, endoscopy w/ biopsies and a HIDA scan (http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/hida-scan.html) which is kind of like a 2 hour CT scan (SUCKS!!!). My gall bladder is fine. Still waiting on biopsies and I asked they check for Celiac. So, not a good holiday for me, but my head start is I think I have lost 15 pounds. I didn't eat anything that stayed down until yesterday, that's 10 days.

One good thing about this is I haven't smoked in 11 days. I threw away the pack here at the house and I am determined NOT to start again. I thought about it this morning but decided that was just habit and I resisted.

Please tell me you all had a better week!

Thanks for the well wishes. Yeah, there's never a good time to be this sick, but x-mas makes it worse. When I was in the ER on the 24th I just started bawling thinking I might not be home . Plus, the pain I had (and frequent urgent bathroom trips!) has kept me awake a lot. I had dilaudid in the hospital and even slept through the vampires drawing blood. I woke up and had 3 band-aids where they had drawn blood! I need to have a shower and scrub off all the left over adhesive, yuck! I am guessing the path reports will be back next week. I also had to contact the patient rep because the ER initially treated me like I was just seeking drugs and when they nurses couldn't get an IV started one said "It would be easier if your veins didn't have so much scar tissue you know." HUH? No one deserves that, even if I were an IV drug user. The fact is I was SICK. Oi vey.

sadly, it's typical. Since I also have a mental illness, it is immediately assumed anything I say is unreliable or I'm only wanting drugs. The nurse who said that also came in and put a heart monitor, O2 meter, BP cuff and O2 on me because I was "using narcotics," meaning the dilaudid SHE gave me. However they didn't put any of that on me except for the usual vitals once I was in-patient. Like I said, even if I were a drug addict, that doesn't mean I don't deserve care or respect. I realize plenty of addicts try to get drugs in the ER. But if she can't tell the difference between someone who is actually sick and someone lying about phantom pain asking for a specific drug, she shouldn't be there. That's just the way it is now. :(

Thanks Steve, I do too! You'll get a kick out of this: When I was in the ER, a DR came in and looked at DH's Sox hat and said "I just moved here from Boston 2 months ago." and DH said we are huge Red Sox fans. the DR replied "I'm NOT. I hate baseball and especially hate the Red Sox." Well, F- you too Mr. Dr Man! great way to make a relationship with the patient!

OMG that is not a wonderful way to spend the holidays! Or to lose weight. Mind you, throwing away the cigarettes was a good move... I hope whatever it is, they find out, after all those tests.
