If you have family that lives say within a hour around you and you have to drive over to where they live what do you do??....do you stop by?? or do you call to make sure you can stop by?? or to just do whatever you were there to do and keep going??

How would you act if brother/sister showed up without calling or even if you found out they were in your area and didn't stop or call you??

See my DH's Brother lives just about a hour from us....we were in the area and decide to stop by. didnt' call 1st, and OMG my SIL just about gave us the death look for showing up. We weren't planing on staying the day but just stopped by to say Hi and see how things were and maybe be there a hour or so and then on our way home.

what would you have done??

So if someone just stopped by would you be mad at them and give them the death look??

I would never do that...I would welcome you with open arms. We have family/friends who just happen to come our way and stop by. afew might call "Im up the street and want to see you" and they would be here in just a few mins, and some that dont call but pull up to the house. I don't ever get mad.

Its easy to say "never stop by" you should always call.

Ohhh the social etiquete. The just showing up is irritating. i have that problem now with MIL and DD and clan since they have moved in close to us.

Call first don't just show up and invite yourselves in for several reasons.
1. Personal space.
DW and I might be doing something like having sex!
2. We have a life as well, and it does not revolve around YOU!
We might be out, we might be working on something at the house or in the middle of DS School time(homeshool).
3. If one and two are not in effect. We will make an effort to be cordial and make some time.
Don't be surprised if you get shooed off till another time.

It gets complicated.

It depends on how much time I have what I do. There have been times when I drove through my home town on business and didn't stop at all because I just didn't have time.

I was raised to ALWAYS call first before coming over. And my brother was raised that way as well. My SIL, however, was not raised that way and since my brother is so passive, it's now acceptable for him to do that as well. They showed up the Sunday evening after Christmas and threw O/our lives into a tizzy. Not my mother, of course, since to her, my brother walks on water. But Master and I were not happy about it at all and had to rearrange O/our lives and plans because the demon couple chose to show up. I never, ever pop in unannounced to people. It's rude and impolite and puts pressure on the people you're visiting to suddenly have to switch gears and accommodate you. By just popping in like that you're telling the other person that you don't care what their plans are and you're putting your needs over their own. JMHO
