STD Question???

I could have sworn I'd asked this recently, but I can't find it if I did. So...I'm a little confused about the transmission of STDs. I hear frequently about people practicing safe sex by using condoms during penetration. But...then they also perform oral without protection. Isn't that a little contradictory?? I mean, if you're going to go down on someone unprotected, then why not experience all that there is to experience with intercourse, too.? (I'm assuming other means of birth control.)

SO and I are both clean, so we don't practice 'safe sex'. But...I keep reading about this seeming contradiction and I'd like to learn more about it.

I have no idea on this, Lucky. I would think the same thing that you are. I sure wouldn't want to go down on someone without knowing for sure if they were clean or not. I wouldn't want that thing anywhere near any part of my body, lol.

Lucky, I've seen the contradictions too.

Yes, it is possible to get STDs from oral sex as LM said.

You are right about the confusion. If you use condoms for penetration then you should use condoms for oral. What I am going to state is my opinion on why there is a difference. I believe most people will use a condom for penetration, solely, to protect from HIV / AIDS and really do not think about the other STDs. To complicate it even further research on rates of infection shows transmission of HIV / AIDS is much lower through oral sex than from penetration. Typiclaly if HIV / AIDS is picked up from oral sex it is usally due to an open wound in the mouth and not the result of the activity. In my honest opinion I think people focus on the rate being much lower for oral and will have unprotected oral sex.

I think I posted that article here awhile back, down in the bottom folder.

I developed cervical cancer because of HPV (that had been sexually transmitted, of course) so I'm all for being safe!!! I researched that post you mentioned. You posted it back in January, but when I clicked the link, it said that it no longer existed. :-(
