Define a "date" and just a regular "hang out". What's the difference if the both of you are alone on either one?

I'd say you are on a date if you pre-plan to meet at a certain time and place with the intentions of getting to know each other, enjoy each others company and specifically be with one another.

It's more of just hanging out if you both go to a place thats mutually a place you'd go to whether the other was there or not, haven't specifically planned in advance to be together, or if one of you were to remain there whether or not the other person left (you are not specifically together to be with each other, just merely at the same place at the same time) I'd say it's just hanging out even if you do talk on the phone and say (for example) "Wow, you're going to be at Jimmy's restaurant later? So am I! Guess I'll see you there!" Because even though it was discussed that you'd see each other, the intent is not to meet solely for each others company... make sense???

Makes perfect sense, Vanilla!

So, if a guy that I like and who I think likes me in return(we never mentioned the word dating or going out before though) calls me to ask if I have plans for dinner and if I want to go to a certain place for drinks and dinner? OR inviting me over to his place to watch a movie, that's a date? Without him explicitly saying that it is?

Yes, I'd say it is a date.

It would NOT be a date if he says he's having multiple friends over for dinner/drinks/movies and you are welcome to come too.
