I have been involved with a guy who is divorced and has a son from his ex-wife.

Maybe he's really the father of the little girl, and not the ex's current husband. I had a friend that dated a guy who was really involved in his godson's life and, after my friend kept questioning him, he admitted that the kid could be his.

His behavior is bizarre.

You know there was an answer about your boyfriend being the little girls daddy - and that might explain that...but really, do you want to be in this kind of drama? There are tons of guys, looks for someone that is available.
