first date awkward moments

I haven't dated much in probably three years now. Recently I signed up with an online dating service, and met someone this weekend. We spent about three hours together talking, and then it felt like time to end the date.

This is such a rudimentary question, but it has been so long since I've done this stuff...

My very basic question is, what is going on at the end of a date when the guy is standing there awkwardly right before you say goodbye? Is he wondering if he should kiss you? I didn't want to kiss because we had just met. It was too soon for me. I wouldn't invite someone I had just met to visit my apartment either, so I hope he wasn't standing there expecting that.

I did like talking with this man though, and would like to go out again. I don't know if there is chemistry or not yet. I never know right at the beginning because I am a little shy and nervous at first until I get to know someone. I want to know more about some aspects of his life before I can say whether he is a romantic prospect.

I just told him that I had fun, and said "you have my number".

Now I suspect that he won't call me again because I didn't get physical during the date, didn't flirt or touch him, or kiss him at the end of the afternoon. It's just not my way to move too fast in the beginning.

Well, if that's why he hasn't called, then he's not right for you, is he? I wouldn't worry about it. I don't like to kiss someone on a first meet from OLD either, and they aren't going to get to see my house for MANY dates ;-).
